City Heights Community Development Corporation, hard at work for 25 years, is committed to enhancing the quality of life in City Heights by working with the community to create quality, affordable housing and livable neighborhoods, fostering economic self-sufficiency.
City Heights Wellness Center, a partnership between Rady Children’s and Scripps Mercy Hospital, is dedicated to improving the long-term health of children and families. The heart of the center is the “teaching kitchen”, which serves as both a hub for community gatherings and classes, as well as the core for an innovative nutrition program. It offers cooking demonstrations, food preparation, nutrition planning, safety education and tips for shopping economically for nutritious foods.
Mid-City CAN Food Justice Momentum Team (FJMT) is a sub-committee of Mid-City CAN (Community Advocacy Network), a 150-member neighborhood collaborative committed to community-based decision making, service coordination and integration and advocacy. The FJMT strives to increase access to quality, affordable and culturally appropriate foods, specifically in City Heights. The FJMT’s combined membership has been serving the City Heights community for over 100 years.
Price Charities strives to help people transform their community to a safe, spirited and opportunity-rich place to live and thrive. Since 1994, Price Charities has worked with the community to build an "Urban Village" in the core of the community, where the City Heights Farmers’ Market will be located. The Urban Village now houses a new police substation, elementary school, office building, recreational fields, a library, tennis courts, pool, a community college, an affordable housing development, and a shopping center.
Scripps Mercy, SDSU Foundation and American Red Cross WIC provide nutrition education and supplemental food for pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under the age of 5 in the City Heights area. Fruits and vegetables are promoted at the WIC sites, and they heavily promote the WIC farmers' market voucher program to participants.
San Diego Hunger Coalition has been fighting hunger in San Diego County for over 30 years by mobilizing partners and policy makers to create and implement innovative solutions that lead to lasting, positive change.
The San Diego Nutrition Network (SDNN) collaborative facilitates the collective expertise and influence of over 300 member organizations to impact systems or environmental changes that shape nutrition and physical activity behaviors. SDNN works through health initiatives to engage residents in San Diego County to improve nutrition and physical activity behaviors, and to increase access to healthy foods among low-income residents, their families, and other community members.
The San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative is a countywide public / private collaborative designed to engage community partners in the implementation of strategies outlined in the Call to Action: San Diego County Childhood Obesity Action Plan, a comprehensive community plan to end childhood obesity.
San Diego Youth and Community Services SDYCS has been providing innovative programming for at-risk youth and their families for the past 37 years, including building life skills, understanding child development and productive parenting and developing family-oriented health and nutrition practices.
